I will always provide content notices, on LJ and DW, for anything which strikes me as potentially something which some people might want or need not to read (or not to read without warning). On the Archive of Our Own, I will use archive warnings to the best of my ability, and choose not to use archive warnings when I doubt any apply but suspect that the fic may be disturbing. I may or may not use additional content notices on the AO3; if you require detailed warnings, I suggest you browse here instead. If I have neglected to provide a notice for something here on LJ/DW, or neglected to properly implement an archive warning at the AO3, I will correct myself as soon as the error is brought to my attention.

For a more detailed explanation of my notice & spoiler policy, see here (LJ)/here (DW).

Should you find something, whilst reading one of my stories, that offends you/is incorrect/could offend others/is in any way problematic, please please please do not hesitate to tell me. I will never spew hate at you, I will never attack you, and I will always thank you for taking the time to let me know. (note on problematic content composed by [livejournal.com profile] gyzym & used with permission)

And now, to the fic! )

I am sadly not getting paid or in any other way compensated by Cantrip Candles for this post, nor are they in any other way affiliated with or responsible for me, but I've said a few times before this I should make a list of the fics I've written to specific Cantrip scents, and seeing as they're both raising their prices (due to rising supply costs) and having a really excellent Black Friday–Cyber Monday sale this seemed like a good time to do it--alphabetically by scent, since I'm indecisive.

This doesn't include original writing projects, though I have a few of those with Cantrip scent pairings too; this is just a fanfic list, mostly so I can actually link the words I'm talking about instead of just going "no, really, they're out there!" (It also doesn't include all my favorites; Healing Potion is my personal year-round go-to and one day I will write something that deserves Yule.)

nonisland: sparkling hearts the rich gold of summer ([*] hearts)
Was talking about the Ye Olden Tumblr Days of “give me a number from this list and a character/ship and I'll write a one-sentence very small fic” with [archiveofourown.org profile] mondegreen and...could not actually find a helpful prompt list until I dug up an old table and offered it.

No AO3 crosspost yet, because I don’t enjoy filling out a tag list that’s longer than the fic itself; some of these will be expanded, and the rest I’ll probably do a few more microfics for the same character/ship and put them up as chaptered. This is broadly Choose Not To Warn, though I think everything is either canon-typical or milder than canon.

don’t ask me how long I spent tinkering with the coding instead of writing )
nonisland: a ship in a bottle, at a workbench for creating more of same ([*] tinyshipping)
I put the latest thing I've posted to the AO3, “Anything That Does Not Harm Others” (1789: Les Amants de la Bastille, as adapted and performed by the Takarazuka Revue’s Moon Troupe in 2015), through enough major changes that it might interest some people to see the revision history, as it were.

The original draft was written on an airplane last October (I find ficlets a great way to occupy my brain and distract from flight anxiety); the first rewrite, during that vacation; and while I made a couple of friends read it and provide feedback I couldn’t do much of a canon check. I’d seen the musical exactly once at that point, a month or two prior, and had neither reliable internet access nor a device larger than my phone with me. I got back, rewatched as part of a final edit before posting, and almost scrapped the entire fic because it turned out I’d completely forgotten a major plot point.

It wasn’t until much later I realized that this could, instead, with some edits, enhance the canonical sequence of events, in the way that gives me—as someone who entered fandom on bad late 00s/early 10s genre TV—tremendous nostalgic satisfaction.

Content notes for the drafts: aftermath of torture (taken only about as seriously as the musical does, which isn’t very); kink discovery that results in a sexual situation nobody participating in it has consented to; painplay. Content notes for the edit notes: also, internalized kinkshaming and emotional infidelity.

I haven't done this in nine years, apparently, which is remarkable because I love doing stuff like this--and a little disappointing, since I got back into fandom this year for the first time in about five years, and it would've been nice to have looked at the ones from the last couple of years before this one that I was active in fandom. Still, here we are.

I'm posting this a day early so I stop pressuring myself to finish the accidental novella I'm...closeish to done on ("a short kinkmeme fill to get serotonin from feedback," I said a month ago, as the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia title card announcing this plan physically manifested in midair behind me).

The Q&A fic meme: 2020, in review! )

Next, the first line of every fic longer than 100 words that I finished this year--broken down by fandom, to be nice.

Criminal Minds; Troy; Castlevania (1 each) )
Les Misérables (4 total, the old repost excluded) )
Fire Emblem: Three Houses (2X total) )
nonisland: Sothis sleeping on her throne ([FE3H] throne)
Askbox fic on Tumblr was great.

Anyway Fire Emblem: Three Houses is currently eating my life, somehow (Scott is how, every time "somehow" ends a sentence about a fandom it's Scott) and there are TOO MANY GOOD SHIPS AND CHARACTER DYNAMICS TO JUST WRITE PROPER FIC FOR EVERYTHING leave me comment prompts and you might get words. Leave as many comment prompts as you want; it will increase your odds that at least one will hit.

("kate last time you did a prompt post--" I know I know but I made a sincere effort and that's what counts in life.)

nonisland: les Amis de l'ABC raising the red flag of the revolution at the barricade ([Les Mis] do you hear the people sing)
People these days are all on Tumblr, but I haven't been back to that hell site in something like seven years and I'm doing all right with that.

Anyway, I signed up for [tumblr.com profile] bannedtogetherbingo2020, which uses reasons that books or movies or what-have-you have been banned as the prompts. It's just not a bingo card for me if all I've got is an image (even though they made a very nice image), so here's a table )

Stay tuned for another thrilling adventure of "will Kate ever finish a bingo?"

Update: Well, I tried. 2020 was a hell of a year, and I had a couple of big projects not for the bingo get out of hand along the way. I might yet write some more squares unofficially (I had one in progress at the deadline) and will figure out a way to mark them if I do.
nonisland: image of a fountain pen lying on a sheet of paper, with pale purple flowers off to the side, and text "nonisland" ([*] "nonisland" pen)
Years ago, when I was a tiny baby new to fandom (and therefore to having to have answers right away instead of at some nebulous future point when I was revising a novel that I might at some point get around to completing maybe) and my entire work experience was a bit of part-time retail-minioning, I kept finding myself wondering, “but what do people do all day when they’re supposed to be responsible for magical science-y cities and everyone in them?”

Hell if I knew, really. It seemed to involve paperwork.

Fast-forward. It is now five years later, and I can now say confidently that it does indeed involve paperwork. )

I have the feeling I’m forgetting like fifteen million things, so if you have any questions please do let me know in the comments, I’m always happy to babble. (Especially if you want to know anything about all my Intense Feelings About How Schools Work, I am so sad by how little resemblance like every fictional school ever bears to my experience working at same.)
nonisland: image of a fountain pen lying on a sheet of paper, with pale purple flowers off to the side, and text "nonisland" (Default)
Um. Hello, internet?

I'm trying to get my writing muscles back in gear, but I am a little fannishly adrift at present, so nothing is suggesting itself to me. prompt tables what prompt tables

So: if there is a thing that you'd like to see me write (or that you think I would enjoy writing), that should be able to contain itself in commentfic, prompt me! All fandoms that you know I've consumed the canon to are worth at least asking about, though if the canon is a book I am probably going to be weird about writing fic for it because I get hung up on prose style so maybe not things that are only books (books that have been adapted into other media are okay if you are okay with at least some elements of it being from the adaptation). But otherwise.

Additional qualifiers, expansions, things that are definitely eligible, things that might not be, etc. )

Suggested prompt contents: fandom, character(s) and/or relationship(s), some kind of actual prompt (quote/image/scenario/AU type/whatever)

The more specific you are the more likely I am to stop staring aimlessly into space and actually do something, since specificity is better than "I should write something but there are SO MANY THINGS that I could be!", so, y'know.

ETA: There is now a thread for questions as the first comment in each version of this post! If you would like to know whether I know a thing/like a ship/whatever, there you are! If you have some other question, there you also are!
nonisland: Helen, as seen in the 2003 film Troy, standing alone in the middle of an empty sunstruck street ([Greek myth] Helen of Troy)
fandom: Troy
rating: teen+ audiences
characters/pairings: Hector & Helen, basically gen with canonical pairings
length: ~1000 words
content notices: Canonical character death under non-canonical circumstances; war; reference to canonical domestic abuse; general sadness
tropes & things: alternate canon; character death fix; otherwise not a fix-it at all
summary: To Helen there is no honor worth death.
notes: If you care about Achilles and his narrative, this fic is probably even less something you want to read than everything else I have ever written about or referencing the Trojan War. If not, carry on. Title and cut-text from Suzanne Vega’s “The Queen and the Soldier”.

but the crown it had fallen and she thought she would break / and she stood there, ashamed of the way her heart ached )
nonisland: Camelot in red and gold, with text "make your own destiny" ([Merlin] make your own destiny if you ca)
fandom: Merlin
rating: general audiences
characters/pairings: pre-Freya/Morgana, Gwen&Morgana, mentions of Gwen/Lancelot
length: ~3.2K words
content notices: Reference to offscreen character deaths, discussion of offscreen murder unrelated to those; reference to mind control (Freya is cursed much as she is in canon); Uther’s general existence; effects of offscreen homophobia; really unhistorical historical fiction.
summary: Morgana might be the only person in England who ever tried to befriend a deadly water-spirit.
notes: This is what I’ve seen called “costume historical” or “wallpaper historical” as a setting for romance novels, so if historical precision, detail, and accuracy are essential for your enjoyment this is not the fic for you. Written for [livejournal.com profile] untold_legends. Title is from Regina Spektor’s “Aquarius”. Many many thanks to [archiveofourown.org profile] lady_ragnell for an incredibly last-minute second pair of eyes on this; any errors that remain are entirely my fault one way or another.
ao3 crosspost: here

The water-spirit looks lost, and Morgana’s heart breaks for her even as she thinks, distant and cold, that it’s a good thing Gwen has the poker because if those slender deadly hands close around Morgana’s wrists she’ll be too distracted by the touch to pull away. )
nonisland: Camelot in red and gold, with text "make your own destiny" ([Merlin] make your own destiny if you ca)
fandom: Merlin
rating: teen+ audiences
characters/pairings: Mithian/Vivian, Mithian&Rodor, Arthur/Vivian, mentions of Arthur/Gwen
length: ~7K words
content notices: deals heavily with canonical mind control and references canonical mutually non-consensual kissing due to same, also contains [discussed and agreed-upon in advance] kissing to break a spell
summary: Mithian is surprised at how much it hurts when Vivian comes back from Camelot talking of nothing but Arthur.
notes: Plot-compliant with 2.10 “Sweet Dreams”, but not quite with 4.11 “The Hunter’s Heart”. I owe a debt of gratitude to [archiveofourown.org profile] versaphile for their map of Albion, although I picked and chose as I wanted/needed from there and from canon both re: the layout of Albion. I would also like to thank [archiveofourown.org profile] lady_ragnell for continuing to be the most patient sounding board/cheer squad anyone could wish, for helping me sort out the politics of Albion, and for unsticking the story even before she beta-read it on appallingly short notice. Written for [livejournal.com profile] untold_legends, for the square “against all odds” on my [community profile] trope_bingo card, and for #6 (“Ours”) of [community profile] 100_women table #8. Title from Lady Gaga’s “No Floods”, because this is me writing Vivian. (I really ought to break that habit at some point.)
ao3 crosspost: here (contains additional worldbuilding natter in the endnotes)

And she’s too late, anyway, and a princess may love where she chooses but a queen never. It feels suddenly, terribly unfair that Mithian has made herself a queen-yet-to-be and never allowed herself to notice why she didn’t mind Vivian’s cheerful self-centeredness. )

My year so far has been 1) noble resolutions promptly followed by 2) a family emergency and then 3) an exhausted lull after which 4) househunting began, soon to overlap with 5) a family Situation, which in turn overlapped with 6) moving. Everything from 3 onwards during 7) returning to college part-time.

So.

That's been a thing. And all my noble resolutions to be a good backup mod at [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo and get my fics for that and [community profile] trope_bingo (well, I lie, I've done one trope_bingo one) and [livejournal.com profile] untold_legends have so far fallen rather by the wayside. And I am really really glad I didn't sign up for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen, because eek. (I may well do treats like I did last year, I just...deadlines. Nope.) But I am back to trying to do better, now. Really. Yep.

additional rambling about Merlin tinyships/posting of potentially-abandoned WIP snippet(s?) )

I should stop rambling at my journal and actually do something quasi-useful with my evening, now that we are not having crises and I'm not sick.
nonisland: Helen, as seen in the 2003 film Troy, standing alone in the middle of an empty sunstruck street ([Greek myth] Helen of Troy)
fandom: Greek mythology (literature?)
rating: teen+ audiences
characters/pairings: Cassandra/Helen of Troy; some canonical relationships mentioned
length: ~2000 words
content notices: referenced future canonical character deaths; discussion of Nice Guy™ism (Apollo, re: Cassandra, if that clarifies for you); war
summary: Two princesses of Troy, both used and discarded by the gods.
notes: Written for Femslash February, for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, and for the square “friends to lovers” on my [community profile] trope_bingo card. Title from Sara Teasdale’s “Helen of Troy”.

fandom: Atlantis (BBC)
rating: teen+ audiences
characters/pairings: Ariadne(&Minos)
length: ~700 words
content notices: spoilers for 1.01 "The Earth Bull" and very minor spoilers by implication for 1.03 "A Boy of No Consequence"; references to offscreen ritual sacrifice, and actions which could result in martyrdom for the main character
summary: Ariadne doubts her father's faith.

fandom: The Avengers
rating: teen+ audiences
characters/pairings: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov(/Phil Coulson)
length: ~400 words
content notices: mind control; imprisonment; canon-typical violence
summary: Natasha in the realm of the Frost King. [or: a (scene from a) The Snow Queen AU.]
notes: Originally written for a prompt from Nell—“fairy tale AU, Natasha/someone”—during a three-sentence AU meme. I’d originally planned to expand it into a full fic instead of just a slightly longer and more grammatical ficlet, but have since drifted away from the fandom.

summary: Autumn is the worst time.
notes: Set between s4 and s5. Originally written for the prompt “Gwen/Morgana - but I miss you most of all, my darling / when autumn leaves start to fall” at [livejournal.com profile] dollsome's Autumn (2012) Commentficathon, and also for #18 (“Alone”) of the Women Are Awesome prompt table from [community profile] hooked_on_heroines.
